Thermographic inspection during sea trials: a key asset in yacht surveys

During technical yacht surveys, especially those involving sea trials, the use of a thermal imaging camera is an extremely valuable tool to detect hidden issues that may not be visible through standard visual inspection.

One of the most relevant applications is in evaluating the engine and cooling system. As the engine operates, every component generates heat, but abnormal temperature spikes — for example due to obstructed coolant flow, imbalanced cylinder behavior, or localized friction or stress points — are clearly revealed through thermal imaging.

The attached image is a clear example: during a test run, thermal mapping can highlight specific zones of concern that may indicate early-stage mechanical or thermal issues.

This kind of thermal analysis is non-invasive, fast and easily documented: captured thermographic images can be included in the final report as supporting evidence for recommendations or follow-up maintenance.
